A Canary Poised to Take Flight

Thanks to Comics Continuum, we have our first look at Smallville's upcoming episode "Siren" as they unveil Black Canary as played by Alaina Huffman.

I can't say that I've been a Black Canary fan all my life, I would be lying. I really got to know Dinah through her animated Justice League appearances, so remember my opinion is that of a general DC Comics fan. I think that the costume mostly works, fishnets are never easy to pull off, but the mask does not. While a mask is a good idea, Dinah Lance deserves better than hyperactive eyeliner.

To be fair, Smallville's attempts at the reinterpretation of the costumes of DC's finest are generally hit and miss. With Black Canary, they seem to have managed both at the same time.

That said, I am still eager to see Alaina in action. As I consider her one of the better aspects of the Sci Fi Channel's "Painkiller Jane", I believe she certainly has the chops to pull off Dinah Lance. The big question that remains is whether or not Smallville will give her material she can work with.

The description given by the CW is as follows:

"While secretly working for Oliver (guest-star Justin Hartley), Chloe (Allison Mack) intercepts one of Lex's (Michael Rosenbaum) project files, but she is attacked by the Black Canary (guest-star Alaina Huffman), a mystery woman with a subsonic cry. Dinah Lance, Black Canary's alter ego, is a conservative talk show host who is working at the Daily Planet and clashes with Lois (Erica Durance). Lex convinces the Black Canary that the Green Arrow and his team are terrorists so she launches an attack on the Green Arrow and Clark (Tom Welling). Meanwhile, Lois discovers Oliver's secret."

"Siren" was written by Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders and is scheduled to air February 7.
