Elijah Wood said he "would love" to work on "The Hobbit," the at last coming prequel to the super-successful "Lord of the Ring" trilogy. In an interview with MTV, Wood confirmed rumors that the planned two films would be an adaptation of Tolkien's novel, and then a film that serves as a "bridge" between the events of the novel and the events of LotR.
"I haven't spoken to [director Peter Jackson] directly about it.
I've e-mailed him, and as far as I know, the two films that they're doing, one will be 'The Hobbit' and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings.'"
Sir Ian McKellen is expected to reprise his role as Gandalf the Grey, of which Wood said, "I think that it's important that Ian McKellen is cast as Gandalf, just so that there's a synergy between the films. I think people want it to exist in the same world. So at least now we are assured that it will be done through that same lens, which is great. It's exciting."
And what about the possibility of Wood himself returning as dewy-eyed Frodo? "If I'm asked to go back and revisit that character and it makes sense, I would love to. I would absolutely love to," said Wood.
Fangirls, feel free to swoon now.

no no no!
I really hope he's got confused and the movie isn't a 'bridge' one... cos that'd be kind of rubbish.
Although I'm a moderate Tolkein fan I'm worried about this more from a film point of view... The years before LOTR don't form a story, because they're not a story: a bridge film would end up being a load of random disconnected fan fiction.
And the white council/necromancer plot which everyone keeps citing as a bridge movie story... doesn't occur after the hobbit. It happens during it, it's the reason for gandalf's disappearance in fact.
And the white/council necromancer story is the most workable as a movie, so without it it'd just be terrible.
The most logical thing to do is to stick the necromancer story back into the hobbit & reconstruct 'gandalfs story' of the hobbit, showing where he is when he goes missing in the books.
That way you'd get 2 hobbit films, which gives an epic feel, with the battle of dol guldur as the climax to the first and the battle of 5 armies for the second. You'd get Gollum, elrond, gandalf, galadriel & saruman back, you could easily fit legolas in as well, aragron and frodo may be able to do some cameos at the end (though whether they could be made young enough I doubt.) And the fact is that a 2-part film has plenty of time for people to get to know new characters too.
I'm really hoping elijah's words have been a bit confused or he's heard the same false rumor as everyone else, cos I just can't see how it'd work.

bridge movie= no no no!
It'd just be a load of disconnected fan fic!
Just fill in the bits of the hobbit where gandalf goes missing... that'd make 2 good films out of the hobbit rather than one good but quick film and one rubbish one.
The 'hobbit and the necromancer' 2 film possibility would still mean you'd get Gollum, Gandalf, Saruman, elrond & galdriel returning (& bilbo poss played by a different actor). There would definiatly be a good way to bring legolas back too. Frodo and aragorn might manage cameo's at the end if they could be made to look young enough. And other characters would have plently of time to become fan favourites (look at the characters that are loved from normal length films)
