Supernatural will lose its time slot and its lead in
The CW has announced some schedule changes as a result of the writer's strike. Among them, according to The Futon Critic, on February 28, when the cult hit Supernatural runs out of new episodes, the network's freshman series Reaper will move into Supernatural's time slot Thursday nights at 9, right after Smallville. TV Guide says Supernatural will begin airing the remainder of its already filmed episodes January 31.
Hollywood Reporter spoke to Kelly Kahl, the executive who oversees programming at both CBS and The CW. "With the strike, we have an interesting opportunity to experiment," Kahl says. "With the nice stability from our reality shows, we can get a look at how some of these (scripted) shows do in other time periods." Since reality tv doesn't fall under WGA jurisdiction, many networks are banking on those series to carry them through the writer's strike.
According to Variety, The CW also seems greatly concerned with promoting its new hit Gossip Girl, although the series will be in repeats for a while. Supernatural is currently in its third season, and its steady ratings and strong fan base make it an anchor show for The CW, which may be why the netlet felt it was safe to shuffle. However, Supernatural, which is a better show than it often gets credit for being, fits the classic profile of a show "on the bubble" -- ratings decent enough to keep it on the air, but always in danger of falling below the line. Moving a show around interferes with its ability to keep up ratings momentum.
The media and the network has long acknowledged that Smallville was the perfect lead-in for it, and Supernatural enjoys a high audience retention rate.
A schedule change may not be an entirely bad thing in the long run, however; its current Thursday night slot puts it up against mega-hits like Grey's Anatomy and CSI.
Part of the problem seems to be that not enough viewers know that Supernatural, a clever mix of horror, comedy, and family drama, is even there. This move will feed worries that The CW isn't fully invested in supporting what could be its best show since the network cancelled Veronica Mars.
Fans as well as those involved with the show have noticed the low amount of advertising. Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester, told TV Guide back in October 2007 that he feels the show is "somewhat" supported by the network. "They have a lot of other shows they're trying to launch, and they probably figure that once we're up and running, we can survive on our own. We've hardly had any promotion this year." On the counter-programming against the ratings giants, Ackles said, "the network's excuse for it is, 'That's not your audience, it's an older audience.' I disagree. The same age range watching those shows are tuning in to our show and buying the DVDs." In an interview with TV Addict in September 2007, show creator and executive producer Eric Kripke said, "We always joke that we’re the best kept secret since the Manhattan Project. We don’t get a lot of promotion or advertising, so we have to figure out ways to spread the gospel ourselves, to let genre fans know there’s a bad ass horror show on the CW."

I hope the CW wises up(yeah, right) and realizes what they have in Supernatural. The only reality that's working is Top Model and Smackdown. Supernatural is the CW's Buffy. Look at how well it has done against every single thing thrown it's way. Most of their shows could not do what SN does. They need to embrace their great, strong shows like SN, and quit wasting so much time on empty junk like Gossip Girl, Beauty And The Geek, and the gigantic bomb that is Crowned. SN is the only thing really great going for the CW. If it goes, they will be hurting.

Jensen hit the nail on the head.
The CW expects Supernatural to hold its own, which it does, but its ratings would GO THROUGH THE ROOF if the network simply PROMOTED IT! The CW rarely produces or airs promos for Supernatural.
Thankfully we fans pick up the slack!

I would hope that CW doesn't pull a FOX. FOX fiddled with the nights Firefly aired and finally canceled it. That was by far one of the best shows I have seen in recent years and this has all the underpinnings of an X files except with supernatural phenomena . Great cast, good stories and witty repertoire. The best thing CW has going.. The show they call reaper that is falling into the same slot on Thursdays looks like it will suck big time.
Please keep SN going..
thanks

I think the author was absolutely correct that CW doesn't know how to market Supernatural (when it markets it at all). The show is difficult to describe, but for me the attraction is the Winchester family's dynamics: the two brothers, father, Bobby, and other loved ones. Just as Fox didn't know what to do with FireFly, CW, who's demographics are very different than the WB's or UPN's, can't figure out the age or type of person it wants to attract. So, sticking Supernatural at that late hour on a school night, you loose the teens who watch it. Stupid move for a great show.

Unfortunitly the CW doesn't know what it has with Supernatural, it's much more than a genre show.
Why are the fan suppose to pick up the slack for what the network is suppose to be doing, word of mouth only goes so far, (although Supernatural fans are very loyal and dedicated and I think we are doing an awesome job) if they would only promote it Supernatural could pull in more veiwers than any other of their show. They need to start paying Supernatural some attention over at the CW and start promoting it and giving it the creit it deserves, instead of replacing it with the pile of crap that is Reaper!!
Jensen, Jared, Kripke and Co. keep up the good work, your fans are behind you 110%!!

It would be great if I could say that the CW has faith in SN and therefore is allowing this hiatus to just try to increase the ratings of its failing shows. But I have no faith in the CW's or its decisions. I do believe that SN has grown out of its need for the Smallville lead in and can actually make it on its own. Therefore I'm surprised as to why the CW feels it can't find a spot for SN repeats on other nights while it's trying the Smallville/Reaper combination. If the combination is a relative success, I believe that Supernatural is strong enough to be used as a lead in or as its own independent show. The fanbase is strong enough to support it, if the CW doesn't allow it to get lost in the shuffle.
As it is, I really have a lot of faith in Supernatural making it, I don't have any faith in Dawn Ostroff or the CW in giving it a chance to grow.

If the CW promotes Supernatural as much as they do any other show, we would have so many people watching the show. I think we are holding up well considering our time slot. Jensen was absolutely right in what he said. Luckily Supernatural has a lot of fans to pull the show through.

Supernatural is such a good show. I really wish that the CW appreciated it more. It deserves at least as much promotion as drivel like Crowned gets.
But instead, it goes up against CSI, Grey's and the Office without promotion. It holds steady And now it messes with its timeslot? OK But the CW better not complain that it hasn't grown its audience! .

Thank you, CP. It's a genuine pleasure to read a piece by someone who clearly understands why SN has attracted such a powerful and dedicated viewer base. After years of shallow programming, people are hungry for a drama such as this--an unpretentious little masterpiece of depth, complexity, beauty, and substance. I've always suspected the CW has neglected the series because its executives lack the educational background or artistic sensibility to recognize and respect a work of genius when they see it. But, after reading your commentary, I'm going to hold on to the hope that you're right in suggesting SN is an anchor show which the network feels safe in shuffling. For an unparalled series like this one to be brushed aside in favor of sleazy, silly, superficial fare would be an insult to anyone gifted with the capacity to think.

The DVDs requested most by our military forces in Iraq and Afganistan are "Supernatural," Seasons 1 and 2. In fact, General Patreus honored the two leads of the show for their contributions to our fighting forces. Most of our soldiers are young men and women. So what's this garbage about "Supernatural" attracting only an older audience? I think the show should dump this cheesy network and find a more worthy home.

Thank you for reiterating a fact so apparent to Supernatural fans: that it "is a better show than it often gets credit for being" - Supernatural truly is the CW's best-kept secret. I'm hoping that CBS and the CW at this point ARE fully cognizant of the gem they have on their hands. When they finally wake up and smell the coffee to discover that Reaper just doesn't quite cut the mustard regardless of timeslot or lead-in, they really need to put their energy and dollars to better use by promoting Supernatural instead.

Jensen Ackles got it right. And if I trusted CW I would not be so concerned with this move. But truth is that I don’t trust them. Supernatural doesn’t fit into their coveted teen demographic touting “girl power” (even though the network desperately tries to interfere with the successful formula of this show by trying to infuse it with such) and they have made little efforts to promote the show and give a wider audience a chance to discover it. It’s the fans and grassroots effort that promote it most. Sadly, people hear that it is on CW and brush it off as more teen fluff rather than the intelligent, intricate and mature show that it is. And I find it ironic that Gossip Girl, who doesn’t have to contend with powerhouse competition in a death slot and whose ratings numbers are consistently much lower than Supernatural, is touted as a “hit” while Supernatural is always “on the bubble” with much stronger numbers against killer competition and a more devoted fan base. It just makes me VERY suspicious of CW’s true motives considering that out of all their shows they feel Supernatural is the one that is “expendable” to go on “hiatus”.

I agree that "Supernatural" is under-promoted, and feel that pulling it from the schedule to test "Reaper" in another slot (as if "Reaper," which can't pull "Supernatural's" numbers on an easier night, has a chance in Thursday's death slot!) is a mistake. I've gently expressed my positive support for "Supernatural" along with suggestions for cheap ways to promote it during the strike in both email and snailmail to the CW: Firefox readers, why not check out the text of my letter over on my LJ and send a reasoned, calm, positive version of your own? My letter is here: http://bardicvoice.livejournal.com/21209.html

I think the article suggests everything that the fans have been sying since the show began - it's a great show which would appeal to a lot more people if they were just told about it. Here in the UK it is suffering the same fate, and yet word of mouth is resulting in the show DVDs selling faster than ever. Keep telling your friends how great it is and maybe they will finally realise what a great thing they are on to here. Supernatural is a funny, scary, sexy, tidy little show with some great actors - not just the leads - a leaves you wanting more each week. and I agree that the audience is not just young!!!

Thank you for pointing out that Supernatural has been under-promoted. It's a jewel of a show that is frequently 'on the bubble' due to this lack of widespread promotion. It's certainly not due to a lack of quality. Top notch writing and acting make Supernatural an absolute winner in my book. More people would be certain to find it, enjoy it, and keep watching it with more exposure.

Thank you for acknowledging how underappreciated Supernatural is. I don't understand the reasoning behind the CW's pulling of the show and putting Reaper in it's place. Jensen is 100% correct in that the advertising for the show is miniscule at best....and then SN viewers like myself are subjected to ad after ad after ad for Gossip Girl, One Treel Hill, and Crowned.

I agree wholeheartedly with this article, the CW just doesn't see what an outstanding show they have with Supernatural. I am very concerned that they don't support the hard work of the cast and crew, which contributes much-needed credibility to the network. It's the best show on TV because it actually tells a story through characters that the audience really care about. Dean and Sam Winchester.
There's some very sketchy decision-making going on at the CW!

You are right the CW does not promote Supernatural enough its the best show on TV, let alone on the CW. Thank you for such a spot-on article. I think The CW *is* guilty of under-supporting one of it's best, if not the best show it has, and I think it underestimates its demographic. We're not just kids easily entertained by pretty boys, (though that is very nice!) we're also grown women who appreciate clever storytelling, good scripts, stellar acting and a show that defies easy classification. Supernatural is a class act, and I dearly hope SPN will find a new slot for it soon. Its fans will not sit quietly waiting, I promise you!

When you have the head of the network openly state that she doesn't 'get' a show, there is hardly any impetus to promote it. Yes, Supernatural has an exceedingly broad fan base especially in terms of age. Preteens to Senior citizens make up the audience of this show. There are families that watch it together.
They call Smallville a hit and I've never heard the network refer to Supernatural as a hit, although it manages to keep a good sized audience (which is actually larger than what Neilsen's reports) in one of the toughest timeslots on television. This is a good time to experiment? They tried it before and it failed. So forgive me if I don't trust them at all.

Another "older" fan here. I don't watch Smallville, not so much into the "soapy" aspect. I watch Reaper occasionally, but too many episodes are the same old, same old. Wouldn't touch Gossip Girl with a 20-ft pole, again, not into the "soapy".
Supernatural, along with Heroes and Lost, is a show that I make a point to not miss. And frankly, Lost is getting iffy.

I'm almost 50. This show is like part of my family, the boys are alot like my own sons. It makes me laugh, cry, get excited, and sometimes even think. I can not for the life of me understand the CW's lack of support. It makes not sense, but the fans put more into promoting the show than the network! I proudly wear a tanktop with "Winchester's Witch" across the front. Others wear tshirts and tank tops as well. WE ARE THE PROMOTERS! We happy show the love we feel. We will follow to whatever night or network that Supernatural goes to. If it goes to another network, the CW will be on the losing end since for some of us, Supernatural is the only CW show we watch to begin with!

It is really ridiculous when you look at the amount of promotion CW is ready to do for the soapy shows like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill (who btw, hasn't even started airing and is already being promoted like SPN never was). So I'd say SPN does pretty good considering it goes against some of the most viewed shows on television with practically zero promotion (especially this year).

Thank you for being such a Supernatural advocate. This show is so rich in its history and so heartfelt. I will never understand why the show doesn't get the promotion or the support is truly deserves. I can't imagine how disheartening it must be for everyone involved in the show who put their heart and soul into such a quality show to endure this constant brush-off. Yet, not once, have I felt that anyone involved in the show has let this take away from the quality of the show. They bring their 'A' game each and every week. Supernatural makes me laugh, cringe, cover my eyes and cry during the broadcast. I am so invested in Sam and Dean. Jared and Jensen have breathed life into those characters and I forget they are acting. Their onscreen chemistry is palpable. You can't fake something as real and honest as that. Their friendship and brotherhood is something amazing and I revel in it each time I sit down and watch the show. Incidently, Supernatural is finally showing up on some best of 2007 TV show lists. I think it is a shame though that all of the articles state 'It is the best show you probably aren't watching!'. My family loves the show and it the only one that we sit down and watch together. Anyway I am hearing rumors that CW is not cancelling the show but I wish they would put out an official press release stating that because I know I went into panic mode when I heard the news that Supernatural was being replaced with Reaper. I am glad they are going to air the remaining episodes during the February sweeps month but the 'little show that could' certainly deserves more than that. It has earned it's place in TV history as one of the best shows to ever air on television. I wish the CW execs could see how exceptional this show truly is.

I appreciate the excellent article, but one point of clarification. While it's true many people don't know SN exists, that's primarily because most people have never heard of the CW. When I recommend the show, the usual reaction I get is, "What's the CW?," or "We don't get pay TV," or "Isn't that a shopping channel,?" or "Oh, yeah. I heard about them. All they show is crap." From the outset, the CW has failed to promote itself by publicizing the superb "Supernatural," failed to try to attract an adult audience (people who actually watch television during the week), failed to produce a single successful new series of its own, and failed to do anything to change its image as the home of trash TV. Who's to blame for the CW's abyssmal record? As they say, the fish rots from the head down. Before those CW executives do any worse damage, CBS and Warners better get busy sending out pink slips.

I happen to come across supernatural on the enternet or I would have never know it exsisted because the lack of advertising is just PATHETIC! When Smallville first aired it was heavily promoted with bill boards and commercials everywhere., and it has done well. Supernatual is the best show on the CW and gets next to no support for the network. Why not put Reaper on atfter Smallville, and Supernatural on at 9pm replacing the reruns of other network rejects?
